About Versailles Palace and Giverny

VERSAILLES: The sheer size and grandeur of Versailles has to be seen to be appreciated. “Living like a king” is hardly adequate to describe the atmosphere at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, XV or XVI (pre-1789 of course!). Over 30,000 people lived at or near Versailles during the time of the French kings.

Covering over 2000 acres, with 230 acres of meticulously manicured formal gardens and about 721,000 square feet of total living space, the Palace of Versailles is rightly called the world’s largest palace. The Hall of Mirrors and Royal apartments draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

GIVERNY: About 45 miles from Paris sits the charming town of Vernon. The artist Claude Monet found a disused house and land nearby, at Giverny, where he lived from 1883 until his death in 1926. Many of Monet’s most famous works were painted at Giverny, including his water lily paintings.

You’ll visit Claude Monet’s house (now a museum) and the nearby Museum of Impressionism. The marvelously restored house and grounds grant a glimpse into the idyllic life of Claude Monet, who was not just a successful painter but an avid gardener, botanist and self-taught landscape designer.
