Provence Day Trips From Marseille

A one day trip from Marseille to get to know Provence.

Visit the city of Avignon, the "Pope's Palace", Aix-en-Provence, Cassis and much more! Four itineraries available.


Price: $170 per person

Tours meet in central Marseille and depart promptly at 9:00 am. Tour returns to Marseille around 7:00 pm.

Rail to/from Paris not included in price. "One Night in Provence" also available.

Marseille is an ancient port city well worth a visit, but just as importantly, it is a great starting point for touring the medieval and Roman sites of Provence. Choose from 4 itineraries focusing on the art of Van Gogh or Cezanne, wine, historical monuments, quaint markets, coastal treasures and villages preserved in time. Each day has its own special meaning.

Provence Day Trip Itineraries

Monday and Saturday - Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, Marseille and More:

Depart Marseille for the jewel of the south, Aix-en-Provence, for a walking tour. Choice of weekly farmer’s market or Cezanne studio visit (added fee). Next stop is the coastal resort town of Cassis, and a 45 minute boat ride through the fjord-like calanques. Lunch on your own in Cassis. The day finishes in Marseilles with a stop at Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica, and a view of Frioul Islands and Chateau d’If (prison of the fictional “Man In the Iron Mask” character) . Final stop is the 11the century Saint-Victor Abbey at the entry of the famous Old Port.

Tuesday and Friday - Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and More:

The road to Chateauneuf Du PapeStart the day with a drive from central Marseille to the wonderful city of Avignon. Known as "the city of the Popes", you'll have a chance to visit the "Pope's Palace", which is the biggest Gothic style royal residence in Europe. Next, you'll visit the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a visit and wine-tasting (tasting fees included). After, you'll drive to the Pont du Gard which served as an aqueduct for the city of Nîmes in ancient Rome. Lastly, we'll proceed toward the Alpilles mountain range to visit the medieval town of Les Baux de Provence for a remarkable voyage into the past. (Pictured: the "Pope's Palace" in Avignon)

Wednesday - Arles, Les Baux, Saint-Remy and More:

Depart Marseille and travel through La Crau Plain, made famous in Van Gogh’s wheat-field series of paintings, on your way to stops which include Arles (see the town from both Van Gogh and the Roman's perspective), the charming town of Les Baux de Provence - a typical Provençal village (lunch on your own there), Saint Rémy de Provence, and a traditional olive grove.

Thursday and Sunday - Provencal Markets and More:

Depart Marseille for the Luberon villages of Lourmarin and Bonnieux. Travelers will experience a local farmer’s market in Roussillon or L'Isle sur la Sorgue. Afternoon visit at Gordes, Oppède le Vieux and Menerbes, all designated a "Beautiful Village of France". Lavender Museum visit (closed in January). In season photo stop at the lavender fields of Senanque Abbey (June 15th to July 15th ) Note: This tour does not run on Sunday from November through April.

  • Transfers and transportation by minibus
  • English-speaking driver/guide services

Please note local admissions and museum admissions are not included but are nominal.

Leisure time for lunch (not included) will of course be available during the day.

Three Days in Provence Itinerary


You'll meet your driver at the Avignon rail station upon your arrival from Paris. From there you'll be transferred to your hotel in central Avignon.

Afternoon at leisure and a visit to the "Pope's Palace" (tickets included). Next, visit the Pont d'Avignon (audio-guide included).

Dinner on your own and overnight at hotel.

The road to Chateauneuf Du Pape

In the morning you'll be picked up at your hotel. Enjoy a semi-private (8 people maximum) full-day tour to discover the most beautiful monuments and sites of Provence. Highlights include:

  • Luberon regional park, a region full of charm, known for its beautiful countryside and picturesque hill-top villages.
  • Roussillon, one of "the most beautiful villages in France", famous for its red and yellow ocher cliffs andunusual natural landscape.
  • Gordes, a perched village in Luberon, also one of "the most beautiful villages in France", completely built with dry stones.
  • Visi to the Lavender Museum, exploring this beautiful flower symbol of Provence. During July and August, guests will see a demonstration of the distillation process
  • Stop at the Antiques of Saint Rémy de Provence (Triumphal Arch and Funerary Monument) among olive trees; this landscape was painted several times by Van Gogh.
  • Les Baux de Provence, morning visit to this village set 245 meters high upon a rock.
  • Visit the Pont du Gard, the best-preserved part of a Roman aqueduct, as classified by UNESCO. Truly a breathtaking monument to Roman history.

Dinner on your own and overnight.


Pick up at your hotel. Enjoy a semi-private half-day tour to the vineyards.

The road to Chateauneuf Du Pape

2 options, depending on your travel date:
- On Monday and Thursday: 2 wine tastings in Chateauneuf du Pape
- On other days: 1 wine tasting in Chateauneuf du Pape and then a visit of the Roman theater at Orange.

Drop-off at the Avignon TGV station at 1:00 pm at the end of the tour.

Transfer to Paris via TGV rail.

Tour duration is between 9 and 10 hours. All tours are eight people or less. will gladly book your round-trip rail from Paris to Marseille and hotel accommodations in Marseille if needed. If not booking rail through, please do not book your train tickets until instructed to do so by us.
