Roughly  338,000 men were rescued in about 11 days. Of these some 215,000 were British and 123,000 were French.

Day 5

Securing the port at Antwerp was crucial for the Nazis or their war was over.  The bitter fight for northern France and Belgium, sometimes called the Ardennes offensive and ultimately known as the Battle of the Bulge, began with a  surprise attack on December 16, 1944., and  effectively ended with Allied containment of the German attack on December 27. An astounding 410,000 German troops and 610,000 Allied troops fought. The battle was the bloodiest of World War II, and the third deadliest in American history., with 70,000 casualties and 19,000 dead.
