Napoleon Bonaparte reordered Paris and France from the ashes of the French Revolution. From crowning himself Emperor in 1804 to his disgrace and exile in 1814, Napoleon's ambitious projects ultimately gave Paris the Arc de Triomphe, Rue de Rivoli, the column at Place Vendome, and the church at Madeleine, as well as three new bridges, including the first iron bridge, the Pont des Arts . You can visit the former palace of the Louvre because Napoleon made it into a museum, initially just to celebrate his triumphs. He created the monetary designations of francs, sou and centimes, in use until the rise of the Euro. Churches and cathedrals were re-consecrated. Napoleon was crowned in Notre Dame, narrowly saved from being completely wrecked by real estate speculators eyeing a prime piece of Parisian land for development. Do you find street and address numbering in Paris pretty logical? Thank Napoleon, who decreed the system in use today. He also vastly improved water access and street lighting.
