Villandry, L'Islette and Wine Cave Day Tour Itinerary

High-speed TGV rail takes you an amazing 145 miles in about an hour.  Upon arrival in the city of Tours, meet your guide at the nearby tourist office and begin a lovely day discovering France's historic and gorgeous château country. You'll visit two castles, and one of the largest formal gardens in Europe:

Villandry Castle

Villandry was the last Renaissance castle built in the Loire Valley. In the early 20th century, the sadly neglected gardens and house itself were restored to their 16th century prime by a wealthy American heiress, Ann Coleman, and her French husband Joachim Carvallo.

There is a vibrant heirloom plant conversation program and locals often buy their spring plantings from the castle grounds.

You'll have time to see the manmade lake, and various specialty gardens.  Villandry is really just a very grand version of a family home, as it is occupied by Carvallo heirs.

L'Islette Castle

This Renaissance-era castle is still occupied by heirs of the family that built it.  Gorgeously set on an island in the Indra river, the chateau is in the heart of the Touraine.  Its small scale means you can see every room, and maybe even meet the family.  You'll enjoy aperitifs and snacks along the river after your tour.

A quick stopover in Tours will allow a chance to buy a quick sandwich if you wish.

Your afternoon is spent at a Vouvray estate for a tour and tasting.  A highlight is a visit to tenth century limestone caves for more tastes and local wines and cheese.
