ABOUT REIMS AND EPERNAY

Has any place on earth been more synonymous with celebration than the French region of Champagne? Champagne launches the bride and groom with a toast (or three), it caps every properly celebrated New Year’s Eve, and ships going to sea are unlucky if their naming does not involve a champagne bottle being broken across the bow.

The city of Reims (pronounced “rance” like France without the “F”) features a famous cathedral, where all the kings of France were crowned, and many venerable champagne houses, among them G.H. Mumm, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot. There is a friendly and very serious rivalry with the nearby town of Epernay, which can lay claim to being the very spot where Dom Perignon is said to have created champagne, and uttered, “Come quickly, I am drinking the stars!” Historians quibble about the truth of this legend, but it captures the spirit of the region and its namesake beverage. Besides Moet and Chandon, Epernay is home to Pol Roger, Perrier Jouet and many a famous house.
