Modern (English) Movies set in Paris

Before traveling to France, get a feel for Paris by renting any of the following movies.

  • Sabrina - The remake with Harrison Ford shows some great shots of Paris during the first act.
  • The Day of the Jackal - The original is a great thriller. Avoid the Richard Gere and Bruce Willis version if possible.
  • Le Divorce - Not one of our favorites but definitely captures a certain point of view about Paris.
  • French Kiss - Also, not one of our favorites but shot in Paris.
  • Ameile - The movie is in French but the cinematography plays like a postcard from the French Government Tourist Office.
  • An American in Paris - A classic look at the city of light.

Other picks: The Last Metro, Gigi, Round the World in 80 days.

Many movie houses in Paris show first run American films. Look for the term VO (Version Originale) on the poster outside of the movie theater. This means that the film will be in english with french sub-titles. VF (Version Francais) means the film will be dubbed in french. The Champs-Elysees is a great area to see a film. Also, the metro stop Odeon has several nice theaters within walking distance.
