A gothic masterpiece. Notre Dame, conceived by Maurice de Sully, was built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries (1163-1345).

Historical Events at Notre dame

  • 1452 - A stage play called "The True Mystery of the Passion" is held in the square at the front of Notre Dame. The performance continues non-stop for four days.
  • 1558 - Mary Stuart, (Mary Queen of Scots), is crowned Queen of France
  • 1793 - During the Reign of Terror, the cathedral becomes known as a "temple of reason".
  • 1795 - The cathedral is sold to a private citizen who intended to destroy the building and use its stone as a quarry
  • 1802 - Napoleon saves the cathedral from demolition
  • 1804 - Napoleon is crowned Emperor in the cathedral
  • August, 1944 - Notre Dame square beomes the centre of French resistance against the Nazi occupation and withstands a four day German seige with tanks and guns.
