The former residence of Edouard Andre is the home of the quaint Musee Jacquemart-Andre.
Andre, a former officer of the Imperial Guards during the Second Republic, built a stately mansion in the middle of Paris in 1869. A few years later he began collecting art.
Ten years later Andre married well known Parisian painter Nellie Jacquemart. The couple then started collecting art in earnest. A stunning collection was built which includes tapestries, furniture, rugs, and rare manuscripts.
Andre died in 1894, his wife Nellie collected art up until her death at the beginning of WWI. From 1894-1914 she traveled the world seeking great art.
Upon her death the mansion was bequeathed to the Institut de France with the provision that the Jacquemart-Andre museum be created.
The original
Jacquemart-Andre collection is the centerpiece of the museum. Many other works have been added. Several Rembrandt's, Van Dyck's and Donatello's are on display.
An audio guide is available free of charge.
Be sure and visit the charming Cafe Jacquemart-Andre located in the original dining room of the mansion.
